
What EPOC actually is
EPOC stands for excess post-exercise oxygen consumption: after a workout ends, the body keeps consuming more oxygen than at rest while it restores itself, replenishing energy stores, clearing metabolic by-products, re-oxygenating blood, lowering temperature and heart rate, repairing tissue. Oxygen consumption is a proxy for energy expenditure, so elevated oxygen means extra calories burned after training stops. That is the entire "afterburn effect": recovery has a metabolic cost, and the body pays it over the hours after the session.
What drives it
Intensity, above everything. EPOC grows disproportionately with how hard the session was, not how long. A genuinely intense interval session, the kind that spends real time in zones 4 and 5, produces meaningfully more afterburn than a long comfortable one, which is why EPOC belongs to the vocabulary of HIIT and interval training rather than steady endurance work. Resistance training with short rests also produces respectable EPOC. Duration matters second; fitness level matters too, and in an unexpected direction: fitter people recover faster, so their EPOC window is shorter, they simply earn their calories during the session instead.
How big it really is
Smaller than the marketing. The research review most often cited on the question, LaForgia and colleagues, 2006, in the Journal of Sports Sciences, puts EPOC at roughly 6 to 15 percent of the energy cost of the exercise itself, with the higher end requiring genuinely hard work. So a session that burned 400 calories might add a few dozen afterwards, a real bonus, not a second workout. Any claim that you will "burn calories for 48 hours" describes an effect so small by that point that it disappears into measurement noise.
The honest summary for a member: the afterburn is real, it rewards intensity, and it is a pleasant footnote, not the reason to train. The reason to train hard sometimes is what it does to your capacity, and the reason results happen is consistency, the theme that runs through everything we write about effort and retention.
Why coaches should still care about EPOC
It makes intensity legible. EPOC gives members a name for why the hard session felt different from the long one, and why both belong in a week. It is a doorway into teaching zones properly.
It argues for polarisation. If afterburn rewards intensity, then intensity deserves to be scheduled and recovered from, one or two hard sessions a week, the rest easier, precisely the split described in zone 2 training.
It sells the measurement, not the myth. Time in high zones is visible on the class screen; the member who spent eight minutes in red can see the work that earned the afterburn. Effort data turns a slogan into a receipt, which is what group heart rate training is for.
How to talk about it without overselling
Say the true version, it survives scrutiny and members respect it: hard sessions keep burning a little extra afterwards while the body recovers, roughly a tenth of the session's cost. Never lead marketing with EPOC; lead with what members can see, their zones, their points, their trend. Clubs that oversell the afterburn recruit members for a magic trick that scales badly; clubs that show visible effort recruit members for a habit. The second group renews.
