Amor Training: different devices, a shared challenge

Switching to Uptivo allowed Amor Training to support compatible devices from different brands while letting existing members keep their heart rate monitors. A month-long challenge, in which only sessions at the club counted, then brought members together in a competition that, according to Matt Jenkins, Head of Small Group Training at Amor Training, encouraged greater class participation.

What makes Uptivo really important for Amor is having a visual representation of our members' recovery.

In their own words

Making coached training more accessible

Amor Training began as a gym built around personal training, with the aim of welcoming people of all ages, experience levels and fitness abilities.

Introducing small group training expanded that offering. Coach-led sessions in smaller groups provided a more affordable alternative to one-to-one personal training, opening the door to more people.

Heart rate monitoring and gamification were already part of the training experience. The decision to switch to Uptivo came from a desire for an open platform that would allow members to use compatible devices from different brands for live feedback during classes.

A new app, the same heart rate monitor

For existing members, moving to Uptivo meant being able to keep their current heart rate monitors and start using a new app. Matt Jenkins, Head of Small Group Training, highlights how important this continuity was, alongside features that went beyond live feedback, such as AI-powered feedback after workouts.

For the coaching team, enabling more members to monitor their intensity during classes is particularly valuable. The data helps coaches judge when to encourage greater effort, when to ease off and when to allow more recovery between sets.

What makes Uptivo really important for Amor is having a visual representation of our members' recovery, not only so that we can see when they're ready for the next set and when they're ready to push themselves, but it's also a great representation of their current fitness levels as well. So if they have good recovery, we know they have good fitness levels.

Supporting different devices met a practical need: it opened monitoring to more members, and those who already owned a heart rate monitor could keep using it.

A challenge that brought members into class

Amor Training organised a month-long Uptivo challenge in which only workouts completed at the club and during classes counted.

Participants aimed to collect as many Uptivo Performance Points, or UPPs, as possible in the blue, green, orange and red zones. Gold awards went to the top five, silver to those placing sixth to tenth, and bronze to those placing eleventh to fifteenth, and there were participation badges as well.

Keeping the challenge within the club gave members an added incentive to attend. Matt reports that class participation increased throughout the month.

The competition also changed the atmosphere at the gym. Matt describes plenty of banter and friendly rivalry, with members enjoying the chance to compete.

Building towards a broader community

Amor Training would like to develop that engagement further. Matt's ambition is to build an Uptivo community where members can share ideas and workouts, celebrate each other's achievements and support one another.

He has in mind a social space built around the club's community and the fitness activities its members take part in, where participation goes beyond organised challenges. That is still a goal for the future. What the club has for now is the experience of the club challenge.

Uptivo has let Amor Training move to an open monitoring platform without replacing members' devices. Through UPPs and challenges, it has also given the team practical tools to engage members and encourage participation in the club's activities.
