MegaBox Fitness: learning when to push and when to recover

At MegaBox, coaches use Uptivo data to help members understand and manage their effort. This process extends from explanations during sessions to reviewing reports and offering advice on workouts outside the gym.

In their own words

A gym for people looking for guidance

Most people who join MegaBox Fitness share a similar experience: they did not feel comfortable in a gym and were unsure how to train. As Meg, Co-Founder & Director of MegaBox Fitness, explains, these members are looking for a friendly environment, support and knowledgeable coaches who care about their wellbeing.

Helping them understand their training is part of the team's work. Coaches explain how hard to push, when to ease off and how much recovery to allow, drawing on the data collected through Uptivo.

The gym has used the system since opening, monitoring heart rate particularly during personal training and small group sessions, and reviewing reports from completed workouts.

Understanding why easing off can be part of training

Meg explains that members commonly believe they should stay in the red zone all the time. Coaches address this by explaining how to manage intensity and when to allow more recovery.

This guidance is put into practice during sessions. Meg recalls a member who was struggling, with an elevated heart rate that was taking a long time to come down. She reduced the intensity and extended the rest periods, an adjustment the member appreciated. At other times, during the cardio elements of a session, the team encourages members to push a little harder when they feel the effort is insufficient.

If we find that there are members who aren't pushing hard enough, we can monitor their heart rates and get them to go a little bit harder. Or likewise, if they're going too hard, then we can monitor the training and adapt the training just to make sure they're not in the red zone all the time.

To help members understand these decisions, coaches review their Uptivo reports with them. The data provides a concrete basis for explaining why staying in the red should not be the goal and how rest periods fit into the session.

From explanations to greater awareness

Meg has observed that these explanations influence how members approach their sessions. Once they understand that they do not need to keep chasing the red zone, they manage their effort better, taking more rest when needed or reducing the intensity.

This is the educational role of monitoring at MegaBox. Coaches use the data to explain what they observe and help each person understand how to adjust their effort.

For a gym whose members are primarily looking for support and guidance with their training, discussing reports together is part of that care.

A report, a message, personalised guidance

Support also extends to sessions completed outside the gym. Coaches review the reports in Uptivo and send members a voice or video message explaining what to watch out for or whether they could push a little harder. Meg highlights that this visibility also allows the team to offer advice when someone is overdoing it in their independent workouts.

The report becomes the starting point for personal feedback: the coach reviews the recorded session and provides guidance to the member.

Uptivo gives coaches a concrete basis for explaining effort and helping members manage it. Real-time data and reports support an ongoing conversation that extends beyond the gym, making monitoring part of the process of learning to train with greater awareness.
