The Zone NYC: Keeping Manhattan Clients Who Travel for Work
A client who flies out on Monday is a client you lose track of until Friday. The Zone NYC decided not to accept that as part of working in New York.

People travel here a lot, especially for work and, thanks to Uptivo, we are able to follow our customers and monitor them remotely.

Founder, The Zone NYC
The studio
The Zone NYC is a personal training studio in Manhattan, founded by Kemaro Miller. He is a member of the National Academy of Sports Medicine and works in corrective exercise, strength, functional training and weight loss. What the studio sells is a personalised programme, run in the studio and online.
The travelling problem
Kemaro's clients travel, mostly for work. That is the hard part of selling a programme rather than a room: the sessions inside the studio are the easy half, and the weeks somewhere else are where a programme stops being one.
How the remote sessions work
The client wears a heart rate sensor wherever they are, and the coach follows the session live, telemetry and video at the same time: heart rate, time in the target zone, calories, Uptivo Performance Points. The coach can correct the effort while the session is running instead of reading about it later, and can set the next workout from the same screen.
The colours
One of the reasons Kemaro gives for choosing Uptivo is the colours. Uptivo works out each member's training zones from their maximum heart rate and shows each zone as a colour on the screen. The client reads a colour while they are training instead of interpreting a number, and Kemaro's argument is that this makes people more aware of what the effort is doing and of whether the programme is working.
The division into colours is a great benefit of the product, it is a useful and effective element to have at a glance an idea of the intensity at which we are training and to do our best.

Sensors and an app with the studio's name on them
Kemaro took up the branding option: the chest straps and the smartphone app carry The Zone's brand rather than Uptivo's, and he worked with us on adapting them to his clients. His reason was that the exclusivity is part of what the studio is selling.
What it took
Nothing was installed in the studio and there is no computer sitting on its network. The client needs a chest strap and the app. The studio kept the model it already had and extended it to wherever its clients are that week.
If half of what your clients do happens away from you, that is the part worth looking at.
