COMPARISON
EGYM Alternative for Gyms and Fitness Clubs | Uptivo
Does member engagement have to arrive attached to a machine purchase? Here is what changes with Uptivo.
What this comparison covers
This comparison covers what decides the outcome of a heart-rate programme in a real club: how many members actually take part, what you have to install and maintain, what happens to a member between sessions, and how much of your operation the platform can carry. It is not an assessment of everything EGYM sells. It is based on publicly available product information reviewed on 11 August 2026; availability may vary by product, plan, market and configuration.
The short version
EGYM is an equipment-led ecosystem. Smart Strength machines, Smart Cardio for connected third-party cardio, the Fitness Hub as an assessment station on the floor, and EGYM Genius generating training plans from the data that comes back. The intelligence is real, and it arrives with a floor plan and a capital budget.
Uptivo is wearable-led. It starts from the heart-rate monitor your member already owns and a screen you already have, delivers a live group heart-rate class in any room, and continues into AI coaching between sessions, programming, bookings, payments, access control and business intelligence on one member record.
If your equipment is fine, mixed, or financed until 2029, that is the difference between an engagement strategy you can start this month and one that waits for the next capital cycle.
The live class you would still have to buy separately
Here is the gap that matters most for a club whose members want group training.
A live group heart-rate display — every participant’s effort on a screen, in colour, as the class runs — is not documented in the EGYM material we reviewed. What EGYM documents is activity points and an in-studio leaderboard in the branded member app, fed in part by heart-rate training systems. In other words, by a system like Uptivo, which you would be buying anyway.
So for a club whose engagement plan centres on group heart-rate training, the equipment-led route means the capital purchase and then still sourcing the class layer.
The differences that decide it
What you have to buy to start. EGYM: connected equipment and in-club stations. Uptivo: a screen you already own and the monitors your members already carry.
Live heart-rate class display. Not documented in the EGYM material reviewed. Native in Uptivo, on a browser-based screen or a Bridge appliance.
Where coaching data comes from. EGYM Genius builds plans from assessments and workout data captured in the club. Nate works from the member’s own training and heart-rate history, plus sleep and recovery from their wearable, which is with them the other twenty-three hours.
Rooms with nothing to connect. The functional area, the free-weights floor and the group room are covered by Uptivo from day one, without a station on the floor.
Assessment. EGYM: the Fitness Hub, a station you buy and find space for. Uptivo: integrates supported body-composition devices, so the analyser you already own feeds the member profile.
Access control. Not covered in the EGYM documentation reviewed. In Uptivo it is a module, by QR code, with or without a barrier.
Time to first class. EGYM: an equipment project. Uptivo: your next class.
Availability may vary by plan, device, market and configuration. Where a capability is described as not documented, it means we did not find it in the public documentation reviewed on 11 August 2026.
Where Uptivo goes further
Engagement that does not wait for the capital cycle
Uptivo supports a wide range of compatible Bluetooth LE and ANT+ heart-rate devices, including monitors your members already own. Compatibility depends on the device’s broadcast profile, firmware and configuration, so before you commit to anything we check the devices actually in circulation in your club and tell you exactly what carries over.
Uptivo Snap turns a screen you already own into a live heart-rate class. No dedicated Uptivo hardware is required; you need a compatible screen or tablet, an internet connection and supported member devices. Your next class can run on it. Not next quarter, after an installation: your next class.
Effort and coaching cover every room from day one, with no machine purchase, no station on the floor and no space to find for it.
Where you want permanent coverage, the Uptivo Bridge is a dedicated appliance, not a general-purpose computer. No customer-managed general-purpose workstation is required, and Bridge software and appliance updates are managed by Uptivo, so it is not one more machine your team has to look after. Bridges link over an embedded mesh: you cover a new room by adding a Bridge, not by pulling cable.
An AI that follows the member, not the machine
EGYM Genius is a plan generator, and its data comes from equipment and assessment stations inside the club. That is a snapshot of the member, taken where you can see them.
Nate, the Uptivo AI coach, is built into the platform. It briefs your trainers on what actually happened in a member’s last session, then follows every member your trainers will never have the hours to reach: chat in the member’s own language, feedback after every session, and plans that move with heart-rate history, training load and, where the member connects them, sleep and recovery from Apple Health, Health Connect and Garmin Connect. Personal training reaches a small fraction of most memberships. Nate is how you serve the rest of them, and how you sell a coaching tier to members who will never buy one-to-one.
A plan is not the reason members leave. The absence of anyone noticing is. Nate is the part that notices.
Uptivo Performance Points are calculated against each member’s own estimated maximum heart rate, so the deconditioned beginner in row three earns the same recognition as the marathon runner beside her for the same relative effort. She stays. No additional UPPs are awarded above 94% of estimated maximum heart rate: the score is engineered to reward the member who comes back on Thursday, not the one who empties the tank on Monday and disappears. Ten levels, Rookie to Titanic, take four years of sustained consistency at 2,000 UPPs a month, and a member with two years invested in your club does not casually cancel.
The club, not just the floor
With Uptivo the same platform also carries:
Bookings, memberships and payments: calendars, waiting lists, renewals, medical certificates and lead management in one workspace.
Programming and video-guided workouts across stations, from a library of more than 1,300 exercises, so a circuit runs without an instructor standing at every post.
Access control by QR code with Uptivo Gate, with or without a barrier, every rule checked in real time.
Uptivo Dash: revenue, attendance and a churn risk score for every member on one screen, with the revenue at risk in euros and a three-month forecast.
Uptivo is modular, so nothing is forced on you: run the live class alone and add the rest when it pays for itself. What disappears is the tax you pay every month reconciling one member across four suppliers.
Keep the equipment you have. Add the layer.
A club that has already invested in EGYM equipment and wants a live group heart-rate experience across the rest of the site is not necessarily choosing between the two. Uptivo provides API access to supported data and integrations, subject to permissions, technical scope and commercial terms, and is used to sitting beside other systems.
Who Uptivo is built for
Clubs that want a live group heart-rate experience at the centre of their engagement, not sourced separately after an equipment purchase. Clubs whose floor is fine, mixed or recently financed and who refuse to tie member engagement to a capital cycle. Clubs that want coverage in the functional area and the group room where there is nothing to connect. Clubs that want to prove it in next week’s timetable before committing anything. Clubs that want bookings, payments, the door and churn reporting on one member record. And operators running several sites who want club-level pricing within a user tier.
Switching from an equipment-led system
Uptivo runs alongside your current setup during the transition. No class goes without a system, the timetable does not move, and members keep training with the devices they already have. If you are keeping your EGYM equipment, Uptivo is designed to sit alongside it.
On history: migration may be available subject to source-system access, compatible export formats, consent requirements and the agreed import scope. Tell us which system holds your data and we will tell you before you sign what can realistically move, rather than after. There is more on our migration page.
What members rate the apps
This one is worth reading carefully. EGYM delivers the member app under each club’s own brand, so most EGYM members never install an app called EGYM and there is no single EGYM listing on Google Play to compare. On the Apple App Store, United States storefront, the EGYM Fitness listing averages 3.6 from 153 ratings. The Uptivo app averages 4.9 from 345 ratings there, and 4.4 from 622 reviews on Google Play.
Average ratings and rating counts read on 11 August 2026 on the Apple App Store, United States storefront, and on Google Play. Ratings change over time, and counts are shown alongside the scores. Compared apps are member-facing apps unless stated otherwise.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best alternative to EGYM for fitness clubs?
If what you actually want is live heart-rate training, engagement and coaching without an equipment investment, a wearable-led platform is the match. Uptivo delivers the live class, the coaching between sessions and the club operations on one platform, starting from a screen you already own.
What is the difference between Uptivo and EGYM?
Where the system starts. EGYM starts from connected equipment and assessment stations and generates plans from that data. Uptivo starts from the member’s wearable, runs a live group heart-rate class in any room, and adds coaching, programming, CRM and access control as modules.
Do we need to buy equipment to use Uptivo?
No. Uptivo works from the member’s heart-rate monitor and a screen, so it covers rooms with no connected equipment at all.
Can Uptivo work with the heart-rate monitors our members already have?
In most clubs, yes. Compatibility depends on the device’s broadcast profile, firmware and configuration. Send us what is in circulation and we will tell you exactly what carries over before you commit.
Can Uptivo coexist with equipment we already installed?
Yes. It does not depend on the brand of your machines, and API access is there for the systems you want to keep, subject to permissions, technical scope and commercial terms.
Does Uptivo include CRM and workout management?
Yes, as modules: bookings, memberships and payments, programming with more than 1,300 exercises, and churn reporting in Uptivo Dash. See our gym management software overview.
Is Uptivo suitable for multi-site fitness operators?
Yes: multi-location support, one member record across every site, and club-level pricing within the selected user tier.
See it on your own club
Bring the things that actually decide this: what is on your floor, what your capital plan already commits to, how many sites, and which devices your members already carry.
